the new status icon looks a lot like the adobe acrobat logo. is this a hint that we will see a pdf export soon?

No, not really. I was just trying to be cute. I have looked for GPL-compatible PDF export libraries but I couldn't find anything that I thought would be useful. Futrelle was working on a Postscript port of CFDG but I haven't seen post anything on it lately.
